The following explanations are for illustration of the general function principle of different spreader roll types:

Bow roll (banana roll)
Here the spreading effect is achieved by guiding the web over an bended roll body. The bow can be fix or can be adjusted by the operator. In both cases the position of the bow is variable in order to adjust the spreading effect. For smoothing of wrinkles one spreader roll will be sufficient. For separating of single webs after slitting usually two spreader rolls will be used. The first roll spreads the webs fan-shaped and the second roll guides the webs parallel again.

Cord expander roll
Cord expander rolls are consisting of a body with implemented plastic ropes in length direction of the roller body. Spreading of the web is achieved by having the ropes relaxed at the point the web meets the roll and by expanding the ropes until the point the web leaves the roll again. By the tension within the web and the friction between the ropes and the web the web is guided towards the sides of the roll.

Lamellar spreader rolls
Lamellar spreader rolls are consisting of a rubberized roller body where the rubber has a lamellar profile. Under the tension of the web this rubber profile is pressed towards the sides of the roll. By this movement also the web is guided towards the sides. Lamellar spreader rolls are mainly used for smoothing the web from wrinkles as the spreading effect will not be strong enough for the separation of single webs after slitting.

Brush spreader rolls
Brush spreader rolls are working similar as the lamellar spreader rolls. But here bunches of bristles will be pressed towards the sides by the web tension, so that the web will be spread by this effect.

Slat expander rolls
Slat expander rolls also works according to the principle that slats will be moved towards the sides of the roller body and thereby stretching the web in the same direction.
